1 Nephi Chapter 1:
Firstly, what stood out to me was that when Lehi saw what I think to be the Lord Jesus, he was not alone, but followed by 12 others. What is the significance of the number 12 I wonder? Why is this so important in dealings with the lord?
Basically what I understand to have happened in Nephi chapter 1 is this:
Nephi starts his records of his father and their family. Lehi lives in Jerusalem, where he prayed to the Lord with all his heart. He saw a pillar of fire, but I'm not sure why. Then he goes on to have a vision of heaven, where he sees God and again, who I think to be Jesus Christ and 12 others. (Maybe his apostles?) Jesus was bright like the sun and the moon, while the others were only as bright as the stars. During his vision, he receives a book (maybe the bible?) where he learns that Jerusalem is going to be destroyed. He then goes around telling everyone about what he saw, and the Jewish people mock him and think he's totally nuts. And they wanted to kill him, I guess? But the Lord saves him.
Nephi Chapter 2:
This chapter starts out with Lehi taking his family out into what is referred to as "the wilderness." They leave behind all of their belongings, gold, silver, and everything else. Because of this, Laman and Lemuel are bitter, and don't believe in their father's words. Nephi and Sam do believe, and Nephi starts to have visions of his own of the Lord. The Lord threatens, to Nephi, of his brother's wrongdoing and threatens that if they do continue to murmur then their seed will be cursed also.
That's all for today.
See you tomorrow!

From Numerology: Twelve is the number of what is completed, which forms a whole, a perfect and harmonious unit. In the ancient civilizations, like Oriental and Judaic, it corresponds to the plenitude, the completion and the integrality of a thing.
ReplyDeleteAnother form of the trinity (1+2 = 3)
You can find more on 12 in the Bible here:http://www.ridingthebeast.com/numbers/nu12.php
There are also sites for biblical numerology especially.
It seems that 12 is a physical world manifestation of the completion of the divine.
Pillar is classicly a representation of a connection of the human relm with the divine relm (called Axis Mundae in many parts of the world, literally a pillar that connects the earth to the heavens).
ReplyDeleteFire to me represents transformation (like the phoenix who burns and is reborn)... seeing a pillar of fire denotes transformation through spirituality or divinity. Fire is a passionate and powerful force that ignites rebirth and transition.
This is such a great idea! If I could get anyone in our ward to log on to a computer we could do this as a r.s. It's a great way to really concentrate and think about what we're reading rather than just out of routine. I have too many blogs to start another one but I think I might try to do the same thing in a journal. Great to look back on too and see how your insights have changed over the years. You are awesome!
